I Wasted $120 on Wood Engraving Before Learning These 5 Lessons (A Creality Falcon User's Story)

Back in October 2023, I landed what felt like a perfect order: 50 laser-engraved notebooks for a local bookstore's launch event. They wanted a custom pattern burned into a thin walnut veneer on the covers. Simple, right?

Here's what I learned the hard way — and the checklist I now use to make sure it never happens again.

The Problem Nobody Warned Me About

From the outside, laser engraving looks like magic. The reality is more like cooking: the quality depends entirely on your ingredients. In this case, the wood.

I'd bought what looked like nice walnut veneer from an online craft store. It was cheap — about $3 per sheet — and claimed to be 'laser-ready.' I loaded up my Creality Falcon, ran a test burn on a scrap piece, and it looked gorgeous. Dark, crisp lines. Perfect contrast.

So I committed. Fifty notebook covers, all prepped with adhesive backing, ready to go.

The first batch of ten came out fine. Then, around number eleven, things went sideways.

The burn depth started varying. Some lines were shallow. Others cut completely through the veneer. A few areas charred badly — (ugh, the smell still haunts me). By the time I noticed, I'd already wasted half the batch.

What most people don't realize is that wood is inconsistent. Even within the same sheet, grain density varies. A 'laser-ready' label means the surface is flat, not that the grain is uniform. My test piece happened to be from a section with consistent density. The rest of the sheet was a lottery.

The Checklist That Saved My Next Order

After the third rejection from the bookstore (they were patient, bless them), I created a pre-production checklist. It's not fancy. But it's caught 47 potential errors in the past 18 months.

Here's what I check now before engraving any wood — especially for paid orders:

  • Grain consistency: I run at least three test burns across different sections of the same sheet. If the results vary more than what I consider acceptable on a visual check, that sheet gets used for prototypes, not final products.
  • Wood species matters: Basswood and birch ply give the most uniform results on a Creality Falcon. Walnut and cherry look beautiful but can have dramatic density shifts. I've learned to avoid figured woods (curly maple, bird's-eye) for consistent runs.
  • Adhesive quality: If you're bonding veneer to another surface, test it first. Some adhesives outgas and create ghost marks around the burn. Learned that one the expensive way too.
  • File format: I use LightBurn for my Creality Falcon. Exporting as SVG works fine, but I've wasted time converting from PNG. Stick with vector formats for consistent scaling.
  • Material thickness: My Falcon 5W handles 3mm basswood ply beautifully. Thinner veneers (under 0.8mm) are tricky — they burn through too easily. I now use a lower power setting and multiple passes instead.

The 'Budget' Choice That Cost Me Twice

I remember thinking I'd saved maybe $20 by buying cheaper wood online instead of from a specialty supplier. That $20 'savings' turned into $120 in waste plus $45 for expedited shipping on replacement materials.

The specialty supplier's material might cost 30% more upfront, but I haven't had a single reject from their basswood ply in the last nine orders. Sometimes the expensive choice is actually cheaper.

When Small Orders Teach You the Most

That 50-notebook order was tiny. Most production shops wouldn't touch it. But for me, starting my little hobby business, it was everything.

When I was starting out, the vendors and communities who treated my 'small' questions seriously are the ones I still buy from today. Same with materials — I still use the wood supplier who personally emailed me back with advice on grain selection for the Creality Falcon. What I'd Tell Someone Starting with a Creality Laser

If you just bought a Creality CR Laser Falcon (or any laser, honestly):

  1. Test more than once. A single test burn tells you almost nothing. Burn the same design in three different spots on the same board. If they all look identical, you're probably safe.
  2. Don't trust 'laser-ready' labels. They mean the wood is flat and the surface is smooth. They do not guarantee consistent grain density.
  3. LightBurn is worth the learning curve. The free software that comes with the Falcon is fine for basic stuff. But LightBurn's material library and test burn features have saved me more in materials than the software costs.
  4. Start with birch ply. It's cheap, consistent, and forgiving. Once you've dialed in your settings on birch, experiment with fancier woods.
  5. Join the Reddit communities. The Creality subreddit and r/laserengraving are full of people who've made every mistake you can imagine. They'll save you time and money.

The best wood for laser engraving? In my experience, for consistency and reliability, basswood or good-quality birch ply. They might not have the same rich grain as walnut or cherry, but they'll burn uniformly every time.

And that consistency is worth more than any aesthetic trade-off when you're filling a paid order.

The bookstore launch? We finally got the notebooks done — three weeks late, with different covers, on birch ply. The owner was understanding. And now I have a checklist I actually use.

That's the win.
