8 Questions I Asked Before Buying Creality Laser Gear (From a Procurement Perspective)

If you're in procurement or operations and someone in your company has put "Creality laser engraver" on the shopping list, you've probably got questions. I've been managing supply orders for a mid-size design shop for about 5 years now, and when we first looked at laser gear—specifically the Creality Falcon series—I had a lot of the same ones. Here are the answers I found useful.

1. Why Creality and not, say, Glowforge or xTool?

This is the first question finance asked me. The short answer: ecosystem and cost. We already had a couple of Creality 3D printers (Ender-3s) running in the shop. Adding a laser meant we stayed in one software ecosystem (Creality Print, which is decent) and one vendor for support. The Falcon 10W was also significantly cheaper than a comparable Glowforge unit—roughly 40% less at the time of purchase (pricing checked December 2024). But it's not a direct apples-to-apples comparison. Glowforge has a much more polished user experience. For a pure production tool where the operator has some technical comfort, Creality is a great value. If your team needs a plug-and-play appliance, the calculus might be different.

2. Is the Creality Falcon easy for a beginner to use?

Yes, but with a caveat. Out of the box, the Falcon A1 (the 10W model) is pretty straightforward. The laser module is enclosed-ish (there's a lid, but it's not a totally sealed unit), and the software has pre-sets for common materials like plywood, acrylic, and leather. My colleague, who had never touched a laser before, was cutting basic shapes within an hour. That said, "beginner-friendly" doesn't mean foolproof. You need to understand focal distance and material compatibility. I remember our first attempt at cutting 6mm birch ply—the laser didn't fully penetrate. We had to adjust the speed and power settings. It wasn't a big deal, but if you're expecting a completely frictionless experience, that's not it.

3. Can you really make money with a 45W laser?

This is a loaded question. The 45W Falcón is a step up. We eventually upgraded from the 5W model to the 45W because we needed to cut thicker materials (up to 10mm acrylic, 8mm wood). The answer: it depends entirely on what you're making. For custom signage, small-batch production, or prototyping, yes—it can pay for itself surprisingly fast. A single custom-engraved wooden sign sold on Etsy for $45 covered the material cost for ten. But if you're trying to run a high-volume production line, a 45W CO2 laser will be slow. You'd want a 60W+ for that. In my experience, the 45W is a fantastic tool for a small business or a prototyping shop. It is not a production workhorse for thousands of units a week.

4. What materials can the Creality 5W laser actually cut?

Let's be direct so you don't waste money. A 5W diode laser is primarily for engraving and cutting very thin materials. It'll cut:

  • Basswood/Plywood: Up to about 3mm (1/8 inch) in one pass. Anything thicker requires multiple passes and risks charring.
  • Cardboard/Paper: Easily.
  • Leather: Thin (under 2mm).
  • Acrylic: Only if it's clear and incredibly thin (under 1.5mm). Colored acrylic will likely just melt.

It will NOT cut: Metal (steel, aluminum), thick acrylic, glass (it can engrave it with a special spray, not cut it). The 5W is a gateway drug, not a production machine. If you're looking for a handheld laser welder, that's a completely different technology (Fiber laser) and you're looking at a different budget entirely.

5. Does Creality software actually work, or is it a nightmare?

I was worried about this, honestly. A lot of these budget brands have terrible software. Creality Print (the laser version) is... fine. It's not Lightburn (which is the gold standard), but it's not a dealbreaker. It imports SVG, PNG, and DXF files reliably. You can set parameters for speed, power, and number of passes. The UI is a bit cluttered in places, and I've had it crash once when processing a very complex vector file (200+ nodes). But for 95% of jobs, it works. We also use the free "LaserGRBL" software as a backup for simple jobs—it's lighter and more stable. So, you have options. Verdict: Functional, not elegant. You'll learn to work with it.

6. How is the customer support if something breaks?

This is a big one for procurement. I've had mixed experiences. The good: Their online documentation and community forums are actually good. You can find troubleshooting guides and YouTube videos for most common issues (belt tension, lens cleaning, firmware updates). The less good: Phone support is essentially non-existent (we tried once, got a generic voicemail). Email support took 2-3 business days for a responde. When our 5W laser module failed (dead diode after 6 months—bad luck unit, I think), they eventually replaced it under warranty, but it took about 10 days to get the new module shipped. That means a week and a half of downtime. For production work, that's unacceptable. I now keep a spare module on the shelf. Not ideal, but realistic for the price point.

7. What's the difference between the 20W and 5W? Should I just skip to 20W?

This is a fantastic question that most guides don't handle well. The short answer: yes, skip the 5W unless you only want to engrave. The 20W (often sold as a "10W" optical output or similar) cuts through 6mm plywood in one pass. The 5W struggles with that same thickness. The 20W also engraves faster because it can move at higher speeds while delivering the same energy. For a small business, the extra $200-300 is an investment in reduced frustration and increased throughput. I regret buying the 5W first. We kept it as a dedicated engraver, but the 20W is the real workhorse. That said, if you're just making custom phone cases and doing light engraving for a hobby, the 5W will work fine.

8. One thing I wish I'd known: the air assist is not optional

No one told me this. The laser modules come with a tiny, weak air pump. It's basically useless for cutting. You need a proper air assist (a small aquarium pump or a dedicated compressor) to blow away smoke and debris. Without it, cuts are charred, have more taper, and the lens gets dirty incredibly fast. It's an extra $30-50 purchase, but it's mandatory. Our first week of cutting without it was a mess—wasted materials, bad cuts. We bought a simple K40-style pump for $25 and it transformed the results. Factoring this into the budget upfront is critical. It's the kind of hidden-cost that makes finance unhappy if you haven't planned for it.
